Food for the Soul
A bi-weekly blog on the virtuous life. Written not by a master, but by a student, but one at least who knows whence sound teaching is found.
Mikhail Nesterov - The Empty Tomb, 1889 As I prepare to celebrate the Easter Vigil, the Passover of the Lord, which is the high point of the entire liturgical year, I can't help but to think about all the families of Bishop Ryan that I serve through my role as president. I think of you all because it is truly this night in all its power and grace that makes our school wonderful. When we return to class on Tuesday, something significant will have occurred over the weekend. The celebration of the memorial of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of our Lord will have put us in touch the purpose and promise of each of our lives and of all human history. The context of faith in the person of Jesus is illuminating for all that we do. Even the seemingly mundane tasks of school are done in sight of our ultimate horizon.
My prayer for you all this night is that the grace of Christ's victory over sin and death; the grace of being restored to the dignity of friendship with God; the grace of a hope that pushes back the darkness of the world; the grace of divine mercy and reconciliation; the grace of the Risen Christ's presence to you even now as he stands at the door of your heart and knocks; and, finally, the grace of the promise of your own resurrection on the last day will be given to each of you. I leave you with a great quote from G.K. Chesterton: "On the third day the friends of Christ coming at daybreak to the place found the grave empty and the stone rolled away. In varying ways they realized the new wonder; but they hardly realized that the world had died in the night. What they were looking at was the first day of a new creation, with a new heaven and a new earth; and in a semblance of the gardener God walked again in the garden, in the cool not of the evening but of the dawn.” What died with Christ was not, in the final place, just Christ. It was the world as we knew it prior to his Rising. He is risen! He is truly risen! Fr. Nelson Comments are closed.
